The Harbor Residency Program

The Harbor Residency at Opera House Arts provides theatre artists and ensembles with two of the most requested resources for the development of new work: time and space.

Located in beautiful Stonington, ME on Deer Isle, the Opera House is a retreat from the demands of day-to-day life, allowing artists in residence to immerse themselves in the creation and development of new work, while simultaneously enriching the artistic life of the community.

Residencies are tailored to each artist’s or ensemble’s needs, and contains three touch-points to connect the artist with our community here on Deer Isle:

  • The Community Potluck: This informal gathering launches the residency, with community members and partners joining us at the Opera House for a meal and conversation. As part of this potluck, artists should be prepared to offer a short presentation about themselves and the work that they will be pursuing during their residency.

  • Education Residency: At some point during the residency, each artist or ensemble will engage directly with the island’s students. Artists will design this component of the residency in collaboration with Peter Richards, OHA’s Interim Artistic Director, Joshua McCarey, OHA’s Education Associate, and John Lincoln, Director of the REACH Performance Center.

  • Public Performance or Conversation: At the close of each residency, artists will participate in a public conversation or performance with the communities of Deer Isle and Stonington. This performance will be offered free of charge to the island community and will be tailored to each artist’s needs – possible options include:

    • Performance of work in progress developed during the residency

    • Performance of other existing work

    • Workshop

    • Formal conversation between artist and community members
