Deer Isle is an island reachable by bridge with several small communities, including Stonington. In the summer the population swells with summer residents and vacationers. Lobster fishing is the mainstay of the economy. The internationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has brought a wide variety of artists, artisans, and writers to the area, many of whom have chosen to stay. Their galleries, studios and workshops are scattered about the island. Stonington, the largest village at the southern end of the island, is a bustling community center with shops, restaurants, lodging, and the Stonington Opera House.
